The first week of Major League Baseball’s 162 game season always includes a few surprises, a few let downs, and more than enough overreactions and exceedingly bold predictions. So, seven games in, let’s look at what baseball has to offer:
Trevor Story: WOW. This kid can absolutely rake. Thus far, he’s 9-31 with 7 taters and 12 RBI. He also has a rocket for an arm, and if you watch him field a back hand in the six hole, shades of Tulowitzki are unmistakable; hopefully Story will prove to be more durable than his predecessor. He has definitely put Colorado on the map, but I wouldn’t go so far to say that they’re a legit playoff contender just yet.
Baltimore Orioles: I had the O’s penciled in as a 3rd place finisher, barely missing the playoffs. But, they are off to a 7-0 start this year, and their offense looks like a force to be reckoned with: “Crush” Davis is crushing the ball, Mark Trumbo has reemerged as a legitimate offensive threat, Manny Machado is doing his thing, and rookie center fielder Joey Rickard is off to a .370 start at the dish. If they’re pitching can pace their offense, they should be able to maintain their momentum.
Cole Hamels: Hamels is off to a great start, which the Rangers desperately needed. He’s gone 13 innings while giving up just 8 hits and 3 runs to the tune of a 2-0 record and 2.08 ERA. If Yu Darvish can live up to his potential, the Rangers look to have a lethal one-two punch at the front of their rotation.
